Betty Northrup, for twenty years the bread lady at her beloved Wegman's, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2016. At 94 years, the heart that gave her a full, active and independent life and carried her to work in the early mornings in all kinds of weather, simply gave out.
The mother of four children, Betty had energetically given her service to a number of employers in industry, banking and food service. Her ethics and loyalty to each were exemplary, and she was proud to have been able to remain productive well into her senior years.
One of her four children, Kent Cushing Northrup, had been born severely disabled. Betty and her husband, Edward, who predeceased her in 1975, gave Kent more love and devotion in his six short years of life than some have received in a lifetime. Their dedication to him was humbling and profound.
She was predeceased by another son, Robb Tyo, to whom she gave her steadfast affection.
She was also predeceased by three siblings, sister Florence at 14, sister Maggie Cavalier, whom she adored, and brother Jack Smith, a WWII veteran, whom she idolized.
Betty was an accomplished seamstress, who presented loved ones with wonderful creations of her own hand. In later years, she also enjoyed painting, reading and history.
She also loved to take pictures, and carried her camera everywhere on the chance that she could capture a memory.
Betty had a severe hearing loss, which she compensated through intelligent reckoning, and which did not keep her from conversation with her customers of the bread department at Wegman's. She regarded them all with love, and couldn't wait to see them. She was touched that many confided events of their lives to her.
Her legacy is to have been passionate in her beliefs, strong in her advocacy of her family, helpful to others in whatever ways she could find and determined in her self-reliance.
Betty Northrup is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Liz Tyo; daughter, Rebecca Weber and her husband, Robert; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
