Alan E. Copenhagen, April 14 at age 73. Predeceased by his parents, Elmer A. and Helen (Pardyjak) Copenhagen and his half-brother, Carl Mengel. Survived by his faithful companion, Dottie; nieces, Lorraine (Jeffrey Flint) Hueber and family, April Buechel and family; cousin, Nancy (Peter) Hollebrand and family. He also leaves behind his best friend, James Charles; friends, Richard Esse, Tim Schramm, Mark Goodenough, Susan (Ivan) Lennon, Jami (Gail Hoins) Jamison, Ruth Tumminello and many friends who will miss him dearly.
Since childhood, Alan loved flowers and working in gardens. The Democrat & Chronicle newspaper had an article on Alan and his blue ribbon winning African Violets at age 14, in 1962 while attending East High School. In the article he was quoted that, "I just like to play in the dirt." He was an avid cook, having every conceivable kitchen appliance and gadget. Alan was chef and proprietor of the Granite Rose Café on South Clinton Avenue in the 80's. He also catered at weddings and other events. He treasured his dogs, having bred various breeds, including Brussels Griffons. Alan was also fond of birds, breeding parakeets and canaries. Alan's life-long profession was that of master haircutter and color specialist having operated the Hair Force salon on Atlantic Avenue for many years until his passing. Alan was always busy volunteering on his days off. Thru the years he was cooking at Aids Rochester, A Meal & More at Christ Church on East Avenue, community meals at Covenant Methodist on Culver Road and other organizations. Alan was a loving caregiver to many of those who were stricken during the Aids crisis. A consummate perfectionist, he enjoyed to the max everything he did and loved caring for his clients.
