Pittsford, NY
Barbara Heffernan passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 3rd, with her four children by her side. Barbara had a profound and lasting influence on her family and the people she met throughout her life.
She taught in Fairport for twenty-five years and was presented with the English Teacher of Excellence award by New York State in 1993. She then went on to supervise student teachers at St. John Fisher college, where she continued to be an inspiring force. Students going back as many as fifty years would still reach out to her, a testament to the strong bonds she made in her life.
One former student said, "Of the small list of favorite people in my life, she's at the top. She believed in me when no one else did and my life was made better because of her. She was truly a gift to this world."
She deeply loved nature, travel, and continual learning. In her retirement, she attended courses at Cal State, the Salk Institute, and Jet Propulsion Lab. At 82, she took a physics course at RIT. She was an avid reader of history and poetry, and rarely failed to complete the daily New York Times crossword puzzle. She reminds us that we are here to love and to learn.
Barbara is survived by her siblings Alan Scarsella and Paula Brodie; her children Amy Needham (Mike), Dan Heffernan (Christine), Licia Vaughn (Ted), and Brandon Heffernan; her grandchildren Connor and Laura Needham; Lani De Lallo (Joe), Daniel Heffernan (Kristy), Kerry McMillan (Matt), James Schnell, Sophie Heffernan; Bethany and Emilia Vaughn; Tess and Grady Heffernan; and great grandchild Emily Heffernan.
