"A wife of noble character, who can find? She is worth far more than rubies." – Proverbs 31:10
On Friday, December 4, 2020, Celia Ann McHugh, loving wife and mother of four children, was welcomed into heaven by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Celia was born on November 18, 1930 in Alden, PA to Joseph and Sophia Janora. At a basketball game in Hanover Township, PA, she boldly introduced herself to a handsome, uniformed sailor, Thomas Patrick McHugh, who had hitchhiked to the game from Navy boot camp. They married in Nanticoke, PA on February 18, 1950 and raised four children together, Thomas, Karen, Susan, and Linda.
Celia was a role model of gratitude for the blessings that filled her life. Her greatest priority was treasuring her husband, family, and many friends. She loved cooking (especially pierogi and potato placki) dancing the Polka, eating hard shelled crabs, and vacationing near the ocean at Myrtle Beach. She served hundreds of children as an employee of the Rochester, NY City School District for 35 years.
Celia is survived by Tom (a retired U.S. Navy Master Chief Petty Officer and her husband of 70 years); her children Tom McHugh (wife Lori), Karen Lasch (husband Bob), Susan Ronco (husband Gary), and Linda Schiffhauer (husband Dave); eight grandchildren: Shayna (husband Christian), David, Jenni, Alyssa (husband Jeff), Pamela (husband Duane), Michele, Sarah, and Emily; three great-grandchildren: Sophia, Marin and Paloma; her brother Edward Janora of Nanticoke, PA, and many nieces and nephews.
A private burial will be at conducted at Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Romulus, NY. A service celebrating her life and legacy will be held as soon as possible in 2021. Celia would want everyone to know that she did not fear death because of her confident hope in the promise of eternal life through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
