He returned to Syracuse, graduating in 1948 with a Liberal Arts degree. He then earned a Masters Degree in Education. In 1950 Mr. Starwald married Grace L. Dilts, also a teacher, whom he met at Syracuse University. She taught school and he coached baseball for a time in St. Thomas, BVI. They shared a love of golf and traveled to many countries to play on some of the world's famous courses such as St. Andrews in Scotland. In 1980, they retired to Seven Lakes, NC where Mr. Starwald played golf and worked as a starter at several local courses. "He had a true love of golf," said Lillie Alexander, a friend in Seven Lakes, "the weather was never too bad to play golf."
After his wife died in 2014, Mr. Starwald moved back to New York State and spent the past year at the Episcopal Church Home in Rochester. He is survived by a niece, Deborah L.
