After a courageous battle with cancer, David DiNicola peacefully passed away at the age of 77, on August 19, 2022. Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, David managed his illness with strength, dignity, and grace. On his final days, David was surrounded by his loving wife and high school sweetheart Catherine, with whom they have been married for 57 years, his devoted children, grandchildren, family, and friends.
As the youngest of seven children, David was born to parents, Alfred and Mary Assunta DiNicola, on December 7, 1944, in the town of Gates. He attended St. Theodores Elementary School and graduated from Gates Chili High School where he developed the craft of pottery in art class and excelled in athletic sports of football, soccer, track, and wrestling. David was taught at an early age the craftsmanship of a mason from his brothers which he worked for over 50 years and developed a love for cooking where his mom taught him traditional Italian cooking. David loved to welcome, entertain, and spoil his family and friends each day, especially throughout the holidays.
When his children were young, David joined the City of Rochester Fire Department. His years working as a Firefighter, Paramedic and Fire Investigator were the best and most rewarding years of his life. David's leadership was the keystone of the Fire Department where he trained, mentored, and provided a culture of comradery, resulting in life-long friendships. He took great pride and joy in his duties as well as the remarkable friendships he had gained throughout his career.
After 34 years of dedicated service, David retired and soon found more time for some of his favorite pastimes; hunting, fishing, and traveling. Many planned trips with family and friends resulted in ongoing and numerous stories about the people they met along the way and the good times they shared. Although fishing brought him happiness, nothing compared to spending time with his family. He loved playing cards, dancing the night away, cooking for a crowd, playing chess with his grandson Joshua, teaching Jacob to cook some family traditional meals, playing cards with Ava, Natalie and Douglas and winning, playing ball with Marco and snuggles with Mila. His grandchildren became his life, his new joy.
