Rochester - Passed away suddenly on May 1, 2020 at the age of 72.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gloria; daughters, Karin (Steven) Marlett Choi & Miranda (Robert) Hazen; grandchildren, Norah & Clara Hazen & Levi Choi; brothers, Paul (Judy) & James (Marlene); nephews & cousins.
Don was born April 22, 1948 in Nagoya, Japan where his parents Don Sr. and Marion were serving in the US occupation.
After listening to the radio broadcast of pitcher Jim Bunning's perfect game against the Mets on Father's Day 1964, he was a lifelong Philadelphia Phillies fan.
He served in Danang, Vietnam in 1971, working with punch card operated payroll computers as one of the "most protected guys in the army."
Don was a quiet hero, once leaving the safety of the compound and placing himself between a Vietnamese civilian coworker and men who were attacking her. More recently, he held the hand of a woman as she died at the scene of a catastrophic car crash.
Living in Rochester since 1974, he has been in futile pursuit of bowling and golfing excellence, achieving "almost average" proficiency. Through it all he has kept his ready smile and been a friend to all.
He was an enthusiastic driver for his home-shopping business of 20 years and as a courier for ACM Labs. Since retiring he's enjoyed combing antique markets for treasures "older than I am!"
Few things made him angry except for the cancellation of baseball this year. He said it had always been something to unite people in hard times, through depression and wars; but Don never held a grudge and always tried to help people laugh.
After family gatherings and all had gone home, he always said to Gloria, "How did we get such a nice family?" We all know how.
Services will be held at a later date.
