Elzie Albert "Bill" Manning,
Passed away on Sunday, December 30th 2007 at age 96. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Charlotte; 2 sons, Kenneth (Nancy) of Hilton, NY and Frank (Janet) of Vernon, CT; also 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; 4 brothers Claude, John, Reuben, and Ralph; 6 sisters Gladys, Goldie, Ethel, Laura, Ivy and Elsie.
Elzie was born on Oct 7, 1911 in Sargent, Nebraska, the last of 11 children of Benjamin Manning and Lucy VanDeventer Manning. He married Charlotte Jeanette Owens on December 28, 1935, in Burwell, Nebraska. They went to Wyoming and later to Long Island, New York. In 1943, he was inducted into the navy and served on the USS Ticonderoga, in the Pacific, until the end of the war. He was in Tokyo Bay during the signing of the armistice. Their next move, after Bellmore, New York was to Katonah, New York followed by a move to Florida in 1957. He retired from the Arcadia Florida Police Department as Assistant Chief. They moved to Venice, Florida and enjoyed many years before moving to Rochester, New York in 2006.
Services held privately at the request of the family. Burial will be held in Greenfield Cemetery, Hempstead, NY at a later date. Contributions may be made in his memory to the VFW Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
