Grace passed away at age 97 on March 13, 2022. She was born Grace Deloris Rigoni on October 6, 1924, in the town of Le Roy, NY. Her husband of 45 years, William G. Lahl, passed away on April 28, 1993, and her daughter Janet Grace (Kenneth) Mandery, passed away on July 30, 2020. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Dave) Kutel and her sisters, Gilda McIntyre and Linda (Gerry) Warren; grandchildren, Michael (Melissa) and David (Michelle) Mandery; great-grandchildren, Chad, Tanner, Madison, Miles and Austin as well as nieces and nephews.
Grace lived in Lime Rock with her family until she was 10 years old, when the family purchased an old dairy farm in Pavillion. All 6 children had assigned jobs to do on the farm, attended a one room schoolhouse, and traveled by horse and buggy in the beginning. Grace graduated from high school at 16, and was Apple Blossom Queen in her senior year. She then attended Rochester Business Institute in Batavia and completed her coursework in less than a year. During that time, she lived with her Aunt Rose and Uncle Charlie. Aunt Rose had a very special place in Grace's heart- she was one of the greatest influences in her life. She lived with her Aunt Rose while she attended TBI and then worked at Lapp Insulator in LeRoy. She later moved to Rochester (the big city) got an apartment with a friend and worked there. Dancing was her favorite thing to do at that time.
Grace met her to be husband Bill, who was just out of the Navy and visiting mutual friends in the Rochester area. They were married on October 23, 1948, and moved to Long Island, where his family lived. They raised two daughters there , moved to Newark, NY in 1974, then to Oriental, North Carolina in 1987, and finally to Greece, NY in 1991, to be near her daughter Janet and family. She worked in several administrative positions over the years, including a high school, publishing company, and Newark Developmental Center.
Grace was a fun-loving, kind and giving person, with a very strong faith that carried her through many hardships. She loved music and dancing, and could be found often doing just that in the kitchen. She was the most loving mom, and made her daughters childhood very special. She was an excellent sewer and baker, she would sew special doll clothes late into the nigh. Her apple pie was the household favorite. She was always working on a project, refinishing furniture, fixing Christmas boxes of toys for underprivileged children, or bringing a neighbor home baked cookies or a pie. She has made so many lifelong friends, every place she has lived. She looks back at the many "chapters" in her life and is very grateful for the life she had. She now is looking to the next chapter, in heaven.
