Helen Van Vliet was born on May 28, 1926 in DenHam, Overijssel, the Netherlands. She passed away on October 26, 2020, after several strokes, at 94 years of age. Her parents were Gerrit Jan and Hendrikje Mina (Bartels) Blekkenhorst and stepmother Dina (Jaspers) Blekkenhorst.
She is predeceased by siblings Hermanus, Mina, Marta, Egbert, Albert and Altje. She is survived by Jan, Nika, Marinus, Willy, Rieky, Janny and Barend.
Helen was trained as a nurse in the Netherlands and cared for tuberculosis patients in the Sonnevanck Sanitarium.
She married Jasper Van Vliet, April 9, 1952. They immigrated to Ontario, Canada where they had three children; Herma, Leo and Gordon. They became Canadian citizens.
In 1963 they immigrated to Rochester, New York where they fostered many children and adopted Amy and Sarah.
Helen earned her GED highschool diploma thus completing the education that was interruped in nazi-occupied Netherlands during WW2. She became an American citizen. Later in life she returned to nursing as a Home Health Aide.
Helen was a dedicated Christian woman. She was a member of the Rochester Christian Reformed Church and later of New Covenant Fellowship.
Jasper Van Vliet, Helen's husband, will be happy to receive visitors at his home most afternoons from 2-4pm.
