Jean L. Taube

September 12, 1917 — September 18, 2016

Jean L (Smith) Taube
Jean Louise Taube, 99, of Falls Creek, Pa, passed away Sept 18, 2016 in Rochester, NY. She was born Sept 12, 1917 in Reynoldsville, Pa, the daughter of the late Charles Ernest and Ruth (Williams) Smith. In 1939, she married Charles Lawrence Taube, who passed away on April 6, 1978. Jean graduated from Beechwoods High School, where she was a member of many sports teams and clubs. After high school, she started a family and was a homemaker initially. She worked for BF Goodrich for over 20 years in manufacturing. She also worked at Brockway Glass which is now owned by Owens-Illinois Inc. She attended Smithtown Community Church for years.

She enjoyed traveling and went to Hawaii with her sister Arlene. She also lived in California near her brother John in San Diego for a few winters. She also loved nature: the trees, gardening, watching the birds and the occasional the bear that visited her house. She was a very self sufficient woman working in manufacturing positions, driving a car well into her 80s and raising a family of seven. She enjoyed crocheting and made several afghans later in life.

Some of her fondest memories were of the very large brick house with a dedicated library and front parlor for receiving guests that the family lived in with her Grandmother Mary McClure Smith. Her father built the house after his father passed away in a mining accident. The house had extensive landscaping as well as cherry trees, maple trees, rose bushes, hollyhock and lilac. There was a large apple orchard that the family made cider and apple butter from. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the home in the spring of 1937 and she had to move next door with her sisters and brothers.

She is survived by her daughters Marian Grinder of Canandaigua, NY, Eleanor Grieneisen of Orlando, FL, Joanne Clontz of Rochester, NY and Susan Winward of Harrisburg, Pa as well as a son Allen Taube of Knox, PA, 20 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson, her sister Lena Ruth Cooper and brother Raymond John Smith. She is predeceased by her parents, husband and three brothers: Melvin Smith, Jesse Smith, and Samuel Smith, and five sisters Margaret Miller, Ethlyn Wayland, Clara Miller, Ila Arlene Perrin, and Mary Bussard, her sons Charles Taube and Thomas Taube.
