Jenette J. Major

August 12, 1940 — February 26, 2021

Jenette J. Major was born on August 12th, 1940, in Rochester, NY to Edward G. Underwood and Ethel A. Malone. She was called home to be with Lord on Friday, February 26th, 2021.

Jenette was the founder and executive director (1967-1971) of a grassroots community organization known as WEDGE Inc., located on the west side of the Brown Square community. As a social justice advocate, she worked tirelessly to improve residents' quality of life in that neighborhood. She continued to fight for incarcerated inmates' rights as she worked to reform the Rockefeller Law and counseled inmates in prison. Jenette worked at several other government agencies such as the County Water Authority and Department of Labor and continued her social activism throughout her life. She was a trendsetter, loved her family, and was known for her love of nature and the outdoors. She could always be depended on to support family and neighbors.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Steven E Major, Tomette R. Major, and Wilbert (Tammy) Major. Grandchildren including Stephanie R. Major, Stephen E. Major Jr., Cassie M. Major, Joseph Smith, Erin Smith, Antionette R. Breedlove, Christian L. Major, and Savannah L. Major. Great-grandchildren Jonathan Major, Anthony Major, and Joshua Smith. She is also survived by her loving sister, Maria (Felton) Strickland, and dedicated her cousins, Doreen Wade and Carol White, and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and loving cousins, and close friends. She will be laid to rest at Webster Rural Cemetery. Jenette Major is gone but never forgotten and will walk with us every day and forever remain in our hearts. With sadness, we give her up to be with the Lord and to be our angel in heaven.
