John D. McClary Jr., born on September 1, 1950, transitioned peacefully from this life on December 20, 2024, at Hildebrandt Hospice. A cherished member of his community, John is remembered for his vibrant personality and passion for music. As a career musician, he showcased his talents at numerous venues, where he delighted audiences with his skillful guitar playing and engaging singing. John learned to play guitar by ear, demonstrating his innate musical ability, and was known to dance with joy, embodying the spirit of the celebration he brought to those around him.
John was much more than an artist; he was the life of any gathering, known for his great sense of humor and ability to uplift those around him. His love for family was profound, and he took great pride in being, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He is survived by his beloved children, Lisa McClary, Tina McClary, John Steven Karalia, Elaine Jones, Kelli Black, Jon Corey Black, and John Jacobi Washington. In addition, he is survived by his loving sisters, Rebecca Shaw Johnson, Essie McClary, Mary McClary, and Margie McClary, along with eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
In love and remembrance, we also honor the memory of his late son, John Michael Karalia, and his sisters Rose McClary Johnson and Gloria Hayward, as well as his brothers, Steven Shaw, Lucious Shaw, Israel Shaw, Alex McClary, and Cephus Shaw, who have preceded him in death.
Beyond music, John had a variety of interests that enriched his life and the lives of others. He enjoyed fishing and drawing, showcasing his artistic side, and spent leisure time biking, listening to music, practicing martial arts, drag racing, and engaging in physical exercise. John's multifaceted hobbies reflected his zest for life and the joy he found in pursuing his passions.
A celebration of John's life will be held on January 4, 2025, at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 6 Empire Blvd, Rochester, NY 14609. The ceremony will begin at 1:00 PM inviting all whose lives were touched by John's presence to come together in remembrance of a remarkable man.
