Joseph Pokorny died Saturday, January 9, 2021 at age 82.
Predeceased by his parents, Karl and Stefani Pokorny; sons, Joseph K. Pokorny and James Pokorny; grandson, Caleb Vanderbilt; siblings, Karl Pokorny, Herta Pokorny, and Cecilia Ward; best friend, Steve.
Survived by his wife, Ann Pokorny; children, Lynn Marie Pokorny (Ernie), Tammy Vanderbilt, Lisa Tunley (Curt); step-children, James Grasby (Kathy), Rick Grasby, and Shawn Grasby (Kym); grandchildren, Joshua Smith (Jen), Sarah Rasnick (Reese), Jennifer Smith, Michael Vanderbilt, Tyler Vanderbilt, Kristina Lake (Jessie) and Olivia Tunley, Alysha Grasby, Jason Grasby, and Cody Grasby; great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Kamryn, and Avery, Madelyn and Preston, Emily and Asher; sister, Helga Sciolino; several nephews and a niece.
Joseph was born February 20, 1938 in Hungary. As a teenager, Joseph fled Europe during the Hungarian Revolution with his mother and three sisters. With help from the Catholic Church, the Pokornys came to America as refugees, building a life for their family through a strong work ethic and sheer determination. He was proud of his heritage and proud to be an American. Joseph had a fierce passion for life and love for his family.
Family will receive friends from 2PM - 6PM on Sunday, January 17th, 2021 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 2636 Ridgeway Avenue in Rochester.
A funeral service will be private. A live stream link will be provided by the family. Private Interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center at 2652 Ridgeway Ave. Rochester, NY 14626 in memory of Joseph Pokorny.
