Karabet Karatas

April 1, 1927 — June 29, 2022

Karabet Karatas (Karl) 1927-2022

Passed away peacefully on June 29, 2022, in Rochester, NY.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Jaklin (née Arabaci), son Nigos (Tracey), and grandchildren Janna and Nathan. He also leaves behind his niece Maryam Cicek and nephew Iskender Yardimoglu, the children of his predeceased sister Anoush.

Born in Ankara, Turkey on April 1, 1927, he trained as a tailor from a very young age. His skills as a tailor provided him the opportunity to hand craft men's clothing throughout his life.

A man of faith, he accepted Christ as his savior in 1965. He has been a member of New Life Assembly since 1978.
As a result of his faith, and answers to his and his family's prayers, as well as talents as a tailor, he had the opportunity to emigrate to United States in 1968. Following his arrival, he was able to assist many family members to immigrate to the United States and pursue their American dreams. Watching the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of those he assisted to immigrate to United States chart their paths across the country was an answer to his prayers.

He worked as a skilled tailor at Bond's Clothing upon arriving in the United States. He later worked, from 1974 until his retirement in 1990, at Eastman Kodak in Building 9.

Karabet especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up and express their talents. He loved attending concerts to listen to his granddaughter Janna playing the violin. Although soccer was his favorite sport, that quickly changed and was replaced as he cheered his grandson Nathan playing lacrosse.

An avid backgammon player, he leaves behind fond memories for those who experienced excruciating losses as he skillfully rolled the dice as he needed, leaving very little to chance.
