Kathy was born 01/06/1950 in Schenectady, New York to the late James and Inez Mahar. Kathy graduated from Notre Dame High School in Schenectady. She went to college at SUNY Brockport earning degrees in Sociology and Nursing. She fell in love with Western NY and her loving roommates and college friends who have remained close all these years. She worked in the area at various jobs and in Nursing at Strong Memorial Hospital, VNS, RPC, and for a private practice treating AIDS patients. While employed at Strong Hospital, she was awarded the Third Annual Paul Burdick Award for "having displayed exemplary compassion, concern, and skill to persons affected with the AIDS disease".
Kathy is survived by her sister Sylvia Bartholomew (Bill) of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; sister Lorraine Crawford (Reggie) of Houston, Texas; and brother James Mahar (Maria) of Ballston Spa, New York. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Special thanks to her caregivers of the last 15 years: Jess, Tammy, Karen, Samantha, Lucretia, and Janet. Also Sylvia Gearing and Linda Muto helped with care and filled in as needed.. Kathy's neighbors Michelle, Rosie, Paula and Billy provided meals, companionship, cat duty and snowblowing.
Friends are invited to a celebration of Kathy's life at New Comer Cremations and Funerals 2636 Ridgeway Ave.
Rochester, NY 14626 Friday, 09/28/2018 from 6pm to 8 pm.
Her burial will be private.
