SCHENECTADY- Kathleen J. Powell, 79, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 surrounded by the love of her family.
Kathy was born in Schenectady, NY on May 8, 1943 to the late George R. and Anne A. (Kalament) Ellis. She was a graduate of Mohonasen High School. She married and had three children while living in Schenectady, NY. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper for Anthony DiSorbo, PA in Schenectady. She returned to school, at age 50, earning her degree as a Registered Nurse at Ellis Hospital School of Nursing. She worked for Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga, NY until moving to Rochester, NY to be closer to her daughter Suzanne. She worked as an RN at Braelock Manor and then Rochester Psychiatric Center until 2004 when she moved to Lake Stevens, WA to be closer to her son Steven. There she worked as an RN at Monroe Correctional Facility until retiring in 2008 at the age of 65.
After retiring, she enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers and pear tree at her Lake Stevens home. She was a lifelong animal lover and enjoyed the company of many dogs and cats over the years. She loved "her" Seahawks and considered herself "The 12th Man."
Over the last couple of years she began suffering from dementia and returned to Rochester, NY in August, 2021 for evaluation and care. She lived with daughter Suzanne, son-in-law Marc and grandson Decker who also helped care for her until she required more focused care, and was moved to assisted living.
Kathy is predeceased by Elizabeth (Ellis) Sherman (sister).
She is survived by Robert Ellis (brother), Steven M. Powell (son), Suzanne M. (Powell) Hefferan, DPM (daughter), Joanne L. Powell (daughter), Decker J. Hefferan (grandson), several nieces, a nephew and her beloved Chihuahua-Dachshund fur-baby "Ginger."
Kathy's family would like to thank the entire staff at Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center for all of their kindness, compassion and love. Thank you for doing what you do every day to make someone's life more peaceful and comfortable in their final days.
A graveside service will be held at Park View Cemetery, 40 Fehr Ave, Schenectady, NY 12309, on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
