Kevin T. Mansfield, age 81, of Rochester, NY passed away peacefully on the evening of August 9th, 2021.
He was born in Yonkers, NY on March 26, 1940, the only child to the late John and Alice (Aikenhead) Mansfield. His father John was an immigrant from Ireland in the early 1900's while his mother Alice was born in Brooklyn. NY.
Kevin grew up in River Edge, NJ and attended Regis High School (Class of '58) located in Manhattan. While attending Regis he met his wife to be "Marge" on a dinner dance cruise around the statue of liberty. Post graduation, Kevin was awarded a four year academic scholarship at Fordham University in the Bronx where he received his Bachelors degree in chemistry. He married Marge in 1962 before heading off to earn his Master's and Doctorate in Organic Chemistry from Ohio State University in Columbus. In 1974 while living in New Jersey he earned the position of chairman for the local unit of the American Chemical Society. Kevin's astounding intellect in nearly any subject matter, ability to fluently speak multiple languages coupled with his well-rounded managerial skill set which he demonstrated daily at Ciba-Geigy/Ciba Specialty Chemicals earned him the experience and challenge to relocate his family, including three sons, from Toms River, NJ to Basel, Switzerland. Upon return of the first expat assignment, Kevin became a chemical plant manager in Cranston, RI for 8 years. Following his second assignment in Switzerland, he accepted the position of patent agent in Tarrytown, NY. For that role Kevin studied late each night after work to pass the New York State Bar exam to practice patent law in the state of New York. Kevin retired from Ciba Specialty Chemicals in 2005. Kevin and Marge were Eucharistic ministers in the Roman Catholic faith.
Before moving up to Rochester in early August 2019 Kevin was a resident of Shannondell Retirement Community in Audubon, PA for 4 years, and prior he lived in New Fairfield, CT for 33 years. Kevin had a very kind-hearted, methodical, helpful personality and yet had a thrill for adventure. He enjoyed his morning workouts in the gym to stay fit but his true passion came during the winter months where he enjoyed bounding down the slopes alpine skiing with his family at the various ski resorts in the New England area coupled with a handful of adrenaline filled trips out West to the Rockies. Many Thanksgivings were spent down to Cancun, Mexico with wife, sons and their families enjoying the warm weather while sneaking away for a scuba diving adventure at one of the many dive sites. During the day, he liked to relax by reading at the pool or joining a morning exercise program to build up an appetite for a mouth-watering Caribbean meal later that evening which he'd choose a seafood entree. Each summer led to a fun filled couple of weeks where he'd once again invite his family to join him at the Jersey shore to tackle the waves boogie boarding, go crabbing in the bay after dinner and racing bumper cars on the boardwalk at night. He also enjoyed showing off his talents at billiards, ping pong, and Wii with his grandchildren. If the weather looked favorable, he would break away to play a few holes of golf with his family or adventure out with his fishing rod and tackle box to the local ponds in search for largemouth bass. Nearing retirement Kevin began cruising with his wife to exotic destinations by ship. When he did find time to unwind, Kevin could be found reading about health, medicine, science, and history. His desire to continually learn along with the ability to maintain the information he'd learned made him a perfect partner for trivial pursuit. Most of all, he was a devoted husband, a caring father, a spoiling grandfather, a loving uncle, and a true gentlemen while enjoying the days being surrounded by family and friends.
Kevin leaves a host of survivors to cherish his memory, Kevin (& Corinne) Mansfield of Essen, Germany, Michael Mansfield of Winston Salem, NC, and John (& Ana) Mansfield of Rochester, NY; four grandchildren, Colin, Jackson, Caley and Alena; and 10 nieces and nephews, Terri Zenkewich, Janet Retta, Patti Greig, Rose Fiorello, Eileen Valerio, James Braddish, Sean Braddish, Kathy Marino, Maureen Wright, and Karen Gilligan.
Along with his parents, Kevin was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Margaret "Marge" Mansfield.
