Louis Tacito Jr.

February 22, 1928 — January 10, 2017

Irondequoit: Passed January 10, 2017 at age 88, born February 22, 1928 in Rochester, NY. Louis was a devoted family man who was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine; parents, Louis and Mary; and brother, Raymond. Louis is survived by his brother, Robert (Rosann) Tacito; 4 children, Michael (Cheryl), James and Thomas Tacito, Adrienne (Harry) Crawford, as well as his 2 granddaughters, Jamilyn Tacito and Allessandra Crawford; and his great-granddaughter, Natalie Greene.

Louis was commonly known by the nick names "Beeboy", "Beebop the Cop", Bopper" and "Cowboy". He was easily and widely recognized as a result of his impressive assortment of western hats.

Mr. Tacito had a long and distinguished career in law enforcement, first as a Patrolman, then a Sergeant and Detective with the Rochester Police Department for over 33 years from 1953-1986. Among his assignments with the RPD was the Traffic Enforcement Unit in which he was a Motorcycle Officer, and the Health Bureau, as well as the Robbery and Burglary Units. He also was an Investigator for the Monroe County District Attorney's Office for 11 years in the Violent Felony Bureau. During his career he was involved in many high visibility cases and arrests and was wounded during a shootout as a result of his heroic efforts to thwart a well-publicized bank robbery.

On the job, he was well known for his attention to detail in his uniform and accessories to the point that he ran out of storage space in his home with his closets full of hats and civilian clothes. In addition to being meticulously attired while in plain clothes, by featuring a wardrobe consisting of 58 suits made by the local Hickey-Freeman Company, he also featured pearl handled revolvers, a white scarf , white on white dress shirts and Mickey Mouse cuff links. This flamboyance tended to cause resentment among some of his rank and file colleagues and police management.

As part of his duties on protection and traffic details, he met and became well acquainted with a wide variety of show business, political and sports dignitaries. To name just a few: John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Dean Martin and Rocky Marchiano.

Louis served his county in the Unites States Eighth Army in the Pacific Theatre and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan at the conclusion of World War II. In addition, he served in the Panama Canal Zone and in Honolulu, Hawaii.

During previous employment at both Eastman Kodak and RG&E, he sang in the respective company chorus'. This activity was emblematic of his love of Jazz and Big Band music which culminated in his tenure as a Disc-Jockey for the University of Rochester Radio Station featuring a jazz program. He was considered an aficionado of these types of music as he met many legendary artists such as Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie, and Perry Como, while maintaining a large and varied collection of recordings of both genres. He traveled extensively to attend Jazz concerts from New York City to San Francisco.

In later years he became quite the raconteur in drawing upon his countless experiences and celebrity acquaintances to recount stories and occurrences from his long and fascinating life.

Private Service will be held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Donations in his name may be made to Mount Carmel House, 288 Frisbee Hill Road, Hilton, NY 14468.
