Mary Hauptmann, of Irondequoit, NY, died peacefully at home on September 22, 2023, at the age of 84. Born and raised in Holden, Massachusetts, Mary graduated from Wachusett High School and Clark University with a degree in History. While in college, Mary met her future husband, Eric, and they married on June 11, 1960.
Mary was a devoted mother to three children. She decided to pursue a nursing degree at the University of Rochester and later a Master's in Public Administration at Brockport University when her children entered school full-time. Hardworking and selfless, Mary became a respected nurse at The Jewish Home of Rochester and later a long-term care administrator at Kirkhaven.
Mary was a true servant to others. She was a member of Summerville Presbyterian Church for 50+ years, serving as a Deacon and Elder and member of the Prayer Shawl knitting group. In her local community, Mary was an active hospice volunteer at The Sunset House, a Compeer volunteer, and a caring neighbor.
While Mary enjoyed reading, gardening, and birding, she cherished her time traveling with Eric on their boat. When they purchased their first sailboat, Mary attended Power Squadron School to become certified in navigation and boat safety. She and Eric enjoyed many years sailing the Great Lakes before undertaking a multi-year journey, on their 42' trawler of the Great Loop- a 5,000-mile waterway adventure down the Mississippi River, along the Gulf coast, up the Eastern seaboard, and through Canadian waterways. As outdoor enthusiasts, Mary and Eric traveled to many ecotourist destinations, such as Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands, the Virgin and Spanish Virgin Islands, the Canadian Rockies, and the Kingdom of Tonga to bareboat.
Mary will forever be remembered as the rock of her family. Her legacy and memory will never be forgotten and will always live in the hearts of her husband, children, and grandchildren.
Mary was predeceased by her daughter, Amy Hauptmann; her parents, Vernon and Dorothy Oliver. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Eric Hauptmann; children, Lisa (Timothy) Swanson and Brett (Lynne) Hauptmann; grandchildren, Lucas Swanson, Nicholas Hauptmann, and Noah Hauptmann.
