A Time to be Born - Paul Joseph Manning, Jr., was born in Bradenton, Florida, on March 15, 1936, to Leola Rhodes and Paul Joseph Manning, Sr. (Both preceded him in death.) At an early age, he became a Christian and joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Bradenton, Florida. In his adult years, Paul attended New Life Ministries, Inc, Rochester, New York.
A Time to Plant - Paul graduated from Lincoln Memorial High School in Bradenton, Florida, with All-State Honors. After completing high school, he matriculated to Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida, on a football and golf scholarship. While attending Florida A&M University, Paul played the position of quarterback on the football team.
Paul was drafted by the United States Army to serve as a rifleman in Company A of the division's 41st Infantry in Neu-Ulm, Germany, while attending Florida A&M University. He won numerous awards including, but not limited to, "All-Division Halfback of the Eastern League of Neu-Ulm Germany". During Paul's tour of duty, his football team held the title of "Champions of the Eastern Conference" for two consecutive years.
A Time to Love - Paul moved to Rochester, New York, after his tour of duty in the United States Army. He was employed by General Motors (Rochester Products). Paul met Anna Beulah Jeanminette from Jeanerette, Louisiana, while working at General Motors. They were married until her death on December 25, 2018, for a total of 49 years.
A Time to Build - While working at General Motors, Paul held many upper management positions and retired as Superintendent of Production and Distribution. He played a key role in securing employment at General Motors for many African-Americans in the area. During his tenure at General Motors, he became an alumnus of the General Motors Harvard School Business.
Paul was an avid golfer and fisherman. He helped establish the first African-American Golf Association in New York State, known as the Lilac Golf Association and served as the president for several years. He played in various tournaments in the United States and Canada. Paul used his golf talents to organize scholarship golf tournaments. These fund raisers enabled students in the area to pursue their college dreams.
A Time of Peace – God's chariot swung low before sunrise on June 9, 2020, to carry Paul Joseph Manning, Jr., peacefully home to be with his Heavenly Father and to join his loving, earthly wife, Anna Beulah Jeanminette Manning and his brother, Charles Jerome Manning, Sr. He leaves to cherish his memories here on life his three children: Paul Joseph Manning III, Michael Simmons (Sandee), Paula Manning Robinson (Jesse) ; six grandchildren: Elexus A. Manning, Paul J. Manning IV, Maleena T. Manning, Elliott A. McKnight, Alexia D. McKnight, and Michael Simmons II; two great-grandchildren; one brother: Clarence Williams (Laverne); one sister: Lora J. Manning; one aunt: Mozelle Rhodes, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
