Randal C. Nelson

October 21, 1958 — April 19, 2020

Professor Randal C. Nelson passed away suddenly on April 19, 2020 at the age of 61.

Randal is survived by his wife of 33 years, Gwendolyn, and his three children: Brendan, Fiona, and Erik.
Randal was predeceased by his mother Joan Nelson.

He is survived by his father, David A.Nelson, and his siblings: Susan (Paul) Bernacki, Catherine Nelson, Julia Nelson (Allen Miller), and Andrew Nelson (Brenae Bailey). Also survived by in-laws Anthony Reynolds (Claudia Vivanco), Becky (Shawn) Perry and Abigail (Steve) Wilcher. Also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

After receiving his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland in 1988, Randal started his career at the University of Rochester. His areas of interest were computer vision and robotics.

Randall took a particular pleasure in teaching a Creative Computation seminar and a hands-on lab class in constructing robots. He enjoyed playing music with a small group of other computer scientists called the Algo-Rythms.

Randal was raised in Laramie, Wyoming, and loved driving across the country back home to Wyoming to visit relatives and enjoy nature. Randal had a particular fondness for paper maps and accumulated quite a collection of them through the years.
Randal enjoyed working with the Boy Scouts when the children were younger. Randal and Gwen are members of St. Anne parish, and Randal loved the traditional music there.

Randal loved nature, all kinds of science, reading, science fiction, robots, music, photography, and woodworking. He was always studying the world around him. As one of his children noted, he could and would talk your head off about any topic you could possibly bring up. He was generous with his time. He greatly loved and will be sorely missed.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Anne Church at a later date. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances in Randal's name may be made to the Highland Park Conservancy online at: https://www.highlandparkconservancy.org/donate.
