Richard Arthur Budis
FAIRPORT, NY - Richard Arthur Budis passed away peacefully at his home in Fairport, NY on July 21, 2024, at the age of 89 surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 6, 1935, in Summit, NJ, Richard was the third child of the late Andrew and Mary Budis. His sister Betty and brother James predeceased him.
Richard grew up in Summit, NJ and attended Bayley-Ellard High School where he made many lifelong friends. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Seton Hall University in 1957. Soon after he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a medic stationed in Amberg, Germany. In 1960, Richard received his teaching certification from Long Island University. He taught English and reading for thirty years at public schools in lower Manhattan, retiring from I.S. 70 (the O. Henry School) in 1990.
In 1962, Richard married the love of his life Marie Brett. They settled in Glen Ridge, NJ and raised five children. An avid gardener, Richard enjoyed tending to his rose and hydrangea bushes as well as growing vegetables, while helping neighbors with their lawn and gardens. Sea fishing was another favorite pastime, and he was an ardent birding enthusiast. Always curious and engaged with culture, history, sports and the world around him, Richard possessed a lifelong penchant for learning. After retirement he and Marie settled in Chatham, MA near Pleasant Bay where they enjoyed frequent visits from their children and grandchildren. A desire to be closer to family eventually brought them to Fairport, NY.
Indeed, family was at the center of Richard’s life. A devoted husband and father, he is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-one years, Marie Budis, his five children Mary Alice Quinn of Haskell, NJ, Brett Budis (Tanya Eckert) of Syracuse, NY, James Budis of Bolton, VT, Erin (Coe) Cramer (Douglas Cramer) of State College, PA, and Christina Cheyne (Brian Cheyne) of Pittsford, NY. He is also survived by seven loving grandchildren, including Sean, Amanda, Theodore, Brooke, Kate, Isabella and Sophia, and two great granddaughters.
A funeral mass will be held 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 30 at the Church of the Assumption in Fairport, NY. Internment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester. Richard will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved and cared for him.
The family deeply appreciates the exceptional medical care Richard received from his team of caregivers and UR Medicine Home Hospice.
