Rowlands, Robert
On Christmas Day, Robert Rowlands died after 82 years as a devoted son, War Veteran, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. After a long courageous battle Bob succumbed to Alzheimer's Disease. During WW II Bob was a Corporal in the USMC as a gunner on the USS Yorktown (CV-05) and fought in the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway where the Yorktown was sunk. He then volunteered for transfer to the USS Yorktown (CV-10).
Originally from Forty Fort, PA, Bob moved to Rochester in 1946 with his new bride Jessie H. Walker. He was employed by Stromberg-Carlson/General Dynamics as a foreman for 34 years before retiring in 1980. His passion was his family. His hobby was collecting and repairing antique clocks.
Bob is survived by his nurturing wife of 60 years, Jessie; daughter, Carolyn (Kenneth) Bradstreet; son, Lt. Col. John (Kathy) Rowlands; granddaughter, Carrie (Steve) McMurray; great-grandson, Jack McMurray; step-grandsons, Jason and Eric Mize; sister, Sis Zarola; brother, Donald (Gail) Rowlands; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Walker and Nancy Rowlands; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Edgar and Alice (Rundle) Rowlands; sisters, Jane Cragle and Barbara Frey; brothers, Edgar and Daniel Rowlands.
Please join the family for a Celebration of Bob's life at the Green Lantern in Fairport on Saturday, December 30, 2006 from 1-4 P.M. where a eulogy will be held at 3 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer's Association, 435 E. Henrietta Rd., Rochester, NY 14620.
