Sara Canfield Bettis-Harrington

On May 6, 2019 she suddenly took her wings and flew... Joined the flock of angels awaiting her, father Frank "Skip" Canfield; and brother Frank "Chip" Canfield, Darlene & Mark Sovie, Larry Babb & many others.

Survived by her wife, Joann Bettis-Harrington; children, Susan Meador, James Harrington, Kayla Harrington, Abby Harrington; grandchildren, Toni Canida & Dante Sopko; mother, Karen Giddis; siblings, Christine (John) Mikkola, Deborah (Dave) Saur, Joseph (Annette) Rickerd, & Paul (Sandy) Rickerd; sister-in-laws, Evelyn (Steven) Church & Michelle Mourey; many nieces & nephews; her best friends, Diane (Kristy) Cinney, Jean Louk, Eric Warren, Keven Harrington, & many good friends.

Sara grew up and graduated from high school in Traverse City MI. Sara played Cello in orchestra and was very active in 4-H and Girl Scouts. Sara played soccer and softball in high school and in college and beyond. Sara did missionary work in the Ukraine. Sara traveled to England and her dream was to visit Ireland sadly she never made it to Ireland. Sara embraced her heritage and loved the Irish culture and Celtic culture. Sara was deaf yet her deafness wasn't a disability to her, it was part of her uniqueness to be embraced. Sara attended Gallaudet University then applied to NTID and attended and graduated from RIT with a bachelor's degree in Social Work with honors. Sara worked at DePaul Community Services in Rochester NY as a counselor, assistant manager, and manager. Sara taught ASL to others at DePaul and outside of DePaul.

Sara was a devoted wife and mother… She loved all her children and grandchildren deeply. Sara was a woman of compassion and integrity. Sara loved with all her heart. Sara loved music, woodworking, reading, camping, and many other things. Sara was adventurous, taking on challenges in her woodworking taking an obscure idea and transforming into a magnificent crafted object. Sara loved animals and had raised sheep, frogs, turtles, toads, fish, and our dogs.

A time to gather and celebrate Sara, will be Sunday, May 12, 4-7pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 2636 Ridgeway Avenue. A service to follow immediately after.
