Stephen "Steve" Judd Coats
July 4, 1939 — April 18, 2022
Mount Morris, New York - Passed away peacefully with his family by his side on April 18, 2022, at the age of 82.
Stephen is predeceased by his parents, Laurence and Jennie (Terwilliger) Coats and his sister and brother-in-law, Anna (Mervin) Babcock.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Deanna (Gardner) Coats; Children, Maureen (Danny) Brewer, Elizabeth (James) Stromquist, Laurence (Aimee) Coats; Grandchildren Stephen Forshee, Nia (Jon) LaParl, Christopher (Heather) Forshee, Alana Stromquist, Kayla Stromquist, Jessica (Zane) Stromquist, Amanda Stromquist and Kenneth Coats; several great grandchildren who brought much joy to his heart; Niece, Darlene (Timothy) Jobes; Nephew Brian Babcock and many other family and friends.
Steve was born in Hornell, New York on July 4th, 1939. He has held many titles, but his most cherished were "Dad", "Gramps", "Coats", and "Cuz". Steve learned the value of a dollar and elbow-grease at a young age. He loved to tell his grandchildren stories about how he learned to drive a tractor before a car.
Steve served in the U.S. Army, then met the love of his life Deanna (Gardner) Coats who he wed on May 4, 1963. He was self-employed as a carpenter and mason for many years. He shared his knowledge, wisdom and problem-solving with his children, grandchildren, family and friends.
Stephen was the owner of Coats Farm Belgians in Mt. Morris, New York with his son Laurence "Butch" Coats.
Steve's favorite time of year was when it was time to cut hay. With his straw hat and suspenders, he would climb on the tractor and spend hours in the fields. He loved to gather with his friends and play euchre once a week and boy was he good. As an avid outdoorsman, Steve enjoyed hunting and fishing; "the one that got away" got bigger every time the story was told.
Steve's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren could always count on him to be in the audience at their awards ceremonies, dance recitals, school concerts, and any milestone event. They were his pride and joy. He enjoyed having Sunday dinner and sharing laughs with his family for many years.
Steve's family will hold a Celebration of Life on his Birthday, July 4th, 2022 at Morgan Estates in Geneseo, New York. More information to follow.
