Thomas Hanley, loving father of eleven children, passed peacefully at the age of 97.
Tom was born on August 10, 1923 to Mary and Daniel Hanley in Adare, County Limerick, Ireland where he grew up on a farm. He attended the University of Galway for two years, studying engineering and playing on the University hurling team. The team participated in and won the Fitzgibbon Cup Premier Hurling Champions two years in a row. His college years were cut short due to WWII.
Tom migrated to Rochester, NY in 1948, and was followed to the US by his sisters Nancy and Catherine, brothers Sean and Donald. His siblings Patrick, Bride and Maureen remained in Ireland. He began a successful career at Kodak in 1948 where he worked until retirement in 1983.
Shortly after his arrival in Rochester, Tom met the Flaherty family by way of the Flaherty Brothers restaurant on East Main St., a favorite meeting spot that was receptive to a large number of Irish immigrants during the 1940's and 1950's.
On May 5, 1951 Tom married Mary Flaherty. They raised seven daughters, Mary Elizabeth (David) Young, Kathleen Hanley, Patricia (Reginald) Gaulle, Ann Hanley, Margaret (Mike) Mantione, Brigid (Kevin) Wade, Maura (Brian) Becker and four sons; Jim (Heidi) Hanley, Tim (Janet) Hanley, Tom (Sue) Hanley and John (Susan) Hanley.
Tom dedicated his life to his to his family and to his church, St. John the Evangelist Church of Humboldt St. Over the course of his 66 years as a parishioner he served in several leadership and stewardship positions. In addition to his parish life, Tom was a member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association of the Sacred Heart since 1939, abstaining from alcohol and tobacco for the entirety of his life.
He was a great storyteller, glad to share a tale of farm life and growing up in Ireland to any receptive audience. Everyone enjoyed hearing his well-told tales.
Tom was predeceased by his wife, Mary, daughter Ann, granddaughter Nicole. He is survived by his 10 children, 27 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, dear friends.
Friends may call 4-7 pm SUNDAY March 21, 2021 at New Comer Cremations and Funerals, 6 Empire Blvd. ( corner of Culver Rd.)
On Monday morning at 10 am, friends may meet for Tom's Mass of Christian Burial at St John the Evangelist Church, Peace of Christ Parish, 553 Humboldt St, Rochester, NY 14610. Interment White Haven Memorial Park.

NYS Guidelines are in force for our chapel. 45 maximum mourners, masks, social distancing are required to attend the visitation and mass. St. John's Evangelist Church is at 50% capacity for COVID19 guidelines.
