ROCHESTER - Walter H. Adkins (Butch, Grampie, P), 71, died Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at his home, after a 20 year battle with cancer due to Agent Orange that he contracted during his service in the Vietnam War.
Born August 13, 1949 in Bangor, Maine. Along with his best friend Wayne LeVasseur, he joined the United States Army in 1968. In 1969, he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. He came to Rochester, NY after his tour ended and was honorably discharged in August 1971.
Butch met his wife, Edith J. Mageary, in January 1970 and the two were married October 29, 1983.
Predeceased by his parents, Ivan C Adkins Sr, Margaret O. Quackenbush, Step Father Guy Etters, 2 sisters, Linda M. Brisson and Gloria J. Nicodemus.
Along with his wife, he is survived by his three sons: Howard R. Adkins, Walter H. (Shea) Wiegele, Michael S. (Crystal) Adkins, Sr. One daughter Amanda L. (Matthew) Kane. 10 grandchildren: Paige Adkins, Andrea, Elijah, and Charlee Grace Wiegele, Mackenzie and Michael Adkins Jr., Ally Leahey, Kellan, Emma, and Olivia Kane. He also leaves 3 Brothers, Russell (Judy) Wescott, Ivan Adkins II, and Howard (Wendy) Adkins, along with many nieces and nephews.
Butch enjoyed playing the lottery, especially his scratch offs. He also loved spending his summers with his family and friends at Pond's Marina in Cape Vincent, NY.
A service of remembrance will be held Tuesday, February 9, 2021 from 4-7pm at Newcomer Funeral Home 2636Ridgeway Avenue, Rochester NY 14626. Internment, with full Military Honors, will be Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 10:00am at Riverside Cemetery 2650Lake Avenue, Rochester NY 14612.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Butch in a special way may make gifts in his name to the Veterans Outreach Center or Lifetime Care Home Hospice.
